Department – Building, Planning, and Code Compliance
Reports to – City Administrator
Job Summary
The Building Official shall exercise the powers and perform the duties listed for that position in the City’s Code of Ordinances, which include but are not limited to, reviewing plans, issuing permits, performing building inspections, working with the Fire Marshal to enforce fire codes, managing staff, providing information for the preparation of agenda items for and attending and participating in Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council meeting, and enforcing the City’s building, subdivision, nuisance, zoning, and floodplain regulations. (While out and about, assist the Code Enforcement Officer with the discharge of that position’s enforcement duties.) If there is both a Building Official and Code Enforcement Officer, the Code Enforcement Officer will handle most of the Department’s administrative duties freeing the Building Official to concentrate on the Department’s more technically demanding functions.

The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Ability to see (must not be color blind) and hear; communicate in the English language; carry items weighing up to 50 pounds and lift to a height of 3-5 feet; walk, stand and kneel for extended periods of time; climb ladders; work in conditions of extreme heat and cold, in inclement weather, and in the presence of extreme noise, dust, filth, and possible mechanical or chemical hazards as well as traffic hazards; work in confined spaces, in attics, and under pier and beam floors; ability to control emotions in stressful situations; drive in a safe and responsible manner; must have the ability to obtain, and maintain a Code Enforcement Officer registration with the State of Texas, follow oral and written instructions, and cross-train in other departments as needed; must be able to develop and maintain a positive working relationship with fellow employees and the general public; must be available to participate in after-hours Planning and Zoning and City Council meetings and make effective public presentations at those meetings.
